Voice picking (also called pick-by-voice) is a way of directing order preparation in which the operator receives spoken instructions through a headset and confirms every action by voice, instead of looking at a screen or reading a paper list. The result is a hands-free, eyes-free operation: the picker can walk, grab the product and handle goods without holding a device or stopping to type.
How it works in practice
A typical voice-directed pick flows like this:
- The WMS assigns the picking task and sends it to the operator's headset.
- The voice tells the operator where to go ("aisle 4, position B-12").
- On arrival, the operator reads a check digit at the location to confirm they are in the right place.
- The voice states how many units to take; the operator confirms the quantity out loud.
- The system records the movement in real time and dictates the next task.
The whole dialogue happens without the operator looking away from the product or using their hands for anything other than picking and placing the goods.
Why it improves the operation
- Hands and eyes free: no terminal to hold and no labels to read, so the operator moves and picks faster.
- Fewer errors: voice confirmation and check digits force a location and quantity check at every step.
- Short learning curve: instructions are spoken and guided; a new operator becomes productive quickly.
- Better for demanding environments: it works well in cold storage, low light or when the operator wears gloves, where reading a screen is awkward.
- Real-time traceability: every confirmation updates inventory instantly.
Voice picking doesn't replace the operator's judgment: it frees them from the screen so they can focus on moving product.
When does it pay off?
Voice picking shines in warehouses with a high number of lines per order, intensive picking operations and where every second and every error counts: distribution, retail, food and beverage, pharma and third-party logistics (3PL). In small or very low-rotation operations, classic radio-frequency (RF) picking is usually enough; the real advantage is being able to combine both by zone and task type.
Óptimo WMS supports voice picking
New Soft Ideas' Óptimo WMS directs order preparation from mobile devices and supports voice picking, so you can operate with a headset —hands and eyes free— over the same inventory and the same warehouse rules (locations, lots, expiration dates, FIFO/FEFO). That lets you mix RF and voice wherever it fits each zone, without losing real-time traceability.
